Located in the midst of a manufacturing hub, our unit is based in Gudapakkam, a village in the Thiruvallur district of industrial Tamil Nadu – a state whose manufacturing strength has compounded for decades, giving our operations an economic advantage that lets us lead with unprecedented finesse. We identify the importance of building locally in order to deliver globally. With pride, we take conscious steps to provide for the community we employ, and to encourage more women into the workforce.
The craft
How a hand-crafted
sola flower is made.
Six stages, from a stalk cut in standing water to a graded flower ready to pack. Every one is done by hand.
Harvesting
Mature stalks are cut by sickle in the marshes after the monsoon (Sept-Nov), bundled and carried to the workshop. No mechanisation at any point.
Drying & peeling
Stalks dry in the sun for 3-7 days until the woody bark turns brittle, then are peeled by hand to expose the white pith.
Shaving the sheets
The pith is pared into thin, even sheets of 2-4 mm with a hand blade — the hardest skill to learn.
Cutting the petals
Sheets are cut against metal templates—rose, peony, dahlia, blossom. An artisan cuts hundreds a day, and every one must match.
Forming the flower
A small core is built first, then 18-50 petals are added outward, each angled and bent by hand — 5 to 15 minutes a bloom.
Drying & finishing
Flowers air-dry for 24-48 hours, stay natural ivory or take water-based dye, and are inspected for shape, colour and size.
